“The new operations facility (BSO) / control center was consistently designed around the principles of sustainability, energy efficiency, and future viability, while adhering to the principles of a circular economy.”

CONCEPT

The Digital Signal Boxes (BSO) are an integral part of Deutsche Bahn AG’s “Digital Rail Germany” program and, due to their importance for railway operations, are subject to critical infrastructure (KRITIS) requirements. The new BSO has been consistently planned with sustainability, energy efficiency, and long-term viability as key guiding principles. From the earliest design stages, the focus has been on resource-efficient construction methods and achieving a high level of environmental performance. The building concept follows the principles of the circular economy, particularly through the ease of disassembly and the extensive avoidance of composite materials, enabling future reuse and straightforward material separation and recycling. The primary structure is designed in reinforced concrete, while the building envelope features a sustainable timber façade. The roof will incorporate an extensive green roof, contributing to improved microclimatic conditions and stormwater retention, as well as photovoltaic panels for renewable energy generation. This holistic approach aims to create a future-oriented, resource-efficient, and energy-optimized facility. A DGNB Gold certification from the German Sustainable Building Council is being targeted. The building was developed as a modular system to accommodate different locations and requirements.

From the feasibility study through to detailed design and tendering, we support complex projects with an interdisciplinary team of architects and engineers.

Sustainability starts with Design

How sustainable a building will be is decided in its first design phases. Sustainability is therefore not an additional requirement for us but part of good architecture: we take the whole life cycle into our decisions and develop durable, adaptable solutions that spare resources and keep CO₂ emissions as low as possible.

Ecological, economic and social requirements are drawn together with the specialist disciplines involved into one integrated concept.

What we consider

Certification creates transparency

Not every sustainable building needs a certificate. Where one is wanted or required, we build its criteria into the design early and coordinate the evidence. Sustainability then becomes measurable, comparable and independently verifiable.

Depending on the project and the system, we take on the auditor or assessor services or guide clients and design teams through the whole process:

The standard we set ourselves

Sustainability shapes not only our projects but also the way we operate as a company. We have EcoVadis independently assess our performance across environment, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement — in November 2025 we were awarded the EcoVadis silver medal.

"Planning sustainably means translating responsibility into concrete decisions — traceable, deliverable, and of lasting benefit to clients, to the people who use the buildings and to the built environment."
