“Connecting Munich beneath the city, Marienhof transforms complex underground infrastructure into an intuitive and seamless mobility experience.”

CONCEPT

The Marienhof station is a key element of Munich’s second S-Bahn trunk line, strengthening the connection between the city center and the regional and national transport network. Together with the two new underground stations at Hauptbahnhof and Ostbahnhof, Marienhof creates a high-capacity interchange between the new second S-Bahn trunk line and the existing U-Bahn, tram, and bus systems, as well as regional and long-distance rail services. Located beneath the historic Marienhof square behind Munich City Hall, the station extends across five underground levels, reaching a depth of approximately 40 meters. The design combines complex infrastructure with a high quality of the user experience and a clear focus on passenger needs. Key priorities included optimizing the fit-out concept, providing intuitive wayfinding, ensuring efficient passenger flows, and creating seamless interchange connections between the various modes of transport. At the same time, particular emphasis was placed on maintaining a strong local identity and sensitively integrating the station into its urban context. Since 2017, atelier4d has been involved in the project, responsible for the design development and detailed planning of the interior architectural fit-out. Through the continuous refinement and optimization of the design, atelier4d contributes to creating a forward-looking mobility hub that brings together functionality, architecture, and urban integration. The project is currently under construction.

The project is planned entirely using Building Information Modeling (BIM), enabling precise coordination and implementation of the interior fit-out, complex building services systems, and sophisticated structural engineering.

EcoVadis Sustainability Rating, DEC 2025 in Silver

From the feasibility study through to detailed design and tendering, we support complex projects with an interdisciplinary team of architects and engineers.

Sustainability starts with Design

How sustainable a building will be is decided in its first design phases. Sustainability is therefore not an additional requirement for us but part of good architecture: we take the whole life cycle into our decisions and develop durable, adaptable solutions that spare resources and keep CO₂ emissions as low as possible.

Ecological, economic and social requirements are drawn together with the specialist disciplines involved into one integrated concept.

What we consider

Certification creates transparency

Not every sustainable building needs a certificate. Where one is wanted or required, we build its criteria into the design early and coordinate the evidence. Sustainability then becomes measurable, comparable and independently verifiable.

Depending on the project and the system, we take on the auditor or assessor services or guide clients and design teams through the whole process:

The standard we set ourselves

Sustainability shapes not only our projects but also the way we operate as a company. We have EcoVadis independently assess our performance across environment, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement — in November 2025 we were awarded the EcoVadis silver medal.

"Planning sustainably means translating responsibility into concrete decisions — traceable, deliverable, and of lasting benefit to clients, to the people who use the buildings and to the built environment."
